If the youth are the heartbeat of our nation, then the future of Singapore certainly seems (or more accurately in this case, sounds) bright. Currently away representing our nation in Korea for the 2011 World Percussion Performing Arts Festival, Rhythm De Pasión comprises of individuals from different walks of life and a variety of musical backgrounds. Through their infectious beats and energetic performances, it is no wonder that the band has made a name for themselves in the local music scene.

As Singapore takes to the polls again tomorrow, we take a moment to reflect on the (almost?) watershed General Elections'11. It has been an exciting year for us as a country, and for us as a generation.

Today, we speak to Zakaria Zainal (or Zak, as he commonly goes by) and Jean Loo. Both Zak and Jean are alumni of the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information (where the RediscoverSG crew are finishing their final year of undergraduate studies), and contributors to GE11: We Were There, a 60-page magazine featuring photos of the General Elections 2011 done in collaboration with Platform, a volunteer photographer group.

We talk to them about the GE11 project, their experiences as young independent creatives, and suss out some advice for young, aspiring Singaporeans who may be considering the freelance route upon graduation.

Ask any purist, the belated viewing of images from the analogue camera contributes to the appeal of film photography. Some send their film to the labs to develop and anxiously wait for its return. Others, like Melissa Kwan, take matters into their own hands and become chemists, mixing chemicals, coaxing images to appear on the emulsion.

My first encounter with Melissa was off a local photography forum, when I asked her for advice on film photography. Friendly and forthcoming, Melissa dished out invaluable advice. Melissa captures her interpretation of Singapore, and tells us that fear is what drives her to do so. Shooting primarily on film, Melissa shares with RediscoverSG her style and passion for the medium.

Dreamy colors, film-like renditions, tilt-shift options, HDR filters — you name it, the iPhone probably has it. The recent explosion of camera apps has given many the ability to have a taste-test of photographic results once exclusive to very select groups of serious photographers.

Discussions aside on whether the simulation of these actual photographic processes can truly be recreated digitally, or whether tapping a few options on your iPhone makes you a photographer, it is undeniable that the popularity of iPhone photography has seen numerous Facebook and Flickr groups set up by fans for fans to share their proud captures and techniques.

Today, we feature Lucian Teo, who has embraced the iPhone as his photographic medium of choice. While he has his own professional equipment, the iPhone allows him a different sort of ease and convenience with which to capture the beautiful and timely moments in life on an every day basis. His thoughtful landscape work can be best summarized in his ongoing Flickr series titled "To And From Work".
