The Unseen/Unsaid 10-part mini series

Episode 1. Bread & Butter
Derek Foo, Elizabeth (Lizzy) Lee, Lim Song Lip and Jeremy Tan, 2011, 3 minutes, Rating TBA
Episode summary
These traditional bakeries/confectioneries have survived longer than most of their competitors into the twenty-first century, and only a handful of their kind remain in business still. Rain or shine, day or night, we can count on them to deliver the goods. The dedication, consistency and monotony of their craft is reflected in many of our working parents, who have chosen to give us the best selflessly, no matter how difficult the process of raising us may be.

About Unseen/Unsaid
Using narratives from everyday Singaporeans to personify forgotten trades and places, Unseen/Unsaid allow viewers a glimpse into the personal struggles of individual Singaporeans whose stories draw a parallel with the surrounding places and landscapes. The 10-part series is born out of a desire to preserve the fragments of Singapore’s past that is rapidly being replaced by new developments.

One new episode will be released from 29 June, 2011, every Wednesday, 11.00AM on rediscover.sg till the week of 31 August, 2011.

The Unseen/Unsaid Paper Toys Collection
As a tie-in with our Unseen/Unsaid series, Lizzy and Jeremy of the RediscoverSG crew have spent the past few months designing a set of five paper toys related to the people/places featured in our webisodes.

These DIY paper toys are retailing at $20 for a set of 5. 100% of the proceeds from the first 500 sets sold will go to the MILK (Mainly I Love Kids) fund to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

If you'll like to buy a set, head over to our shop. Toys are sold while stocks last. We ship both locally and internationally.

  1. Congratulations on an exceptional piece of work. Well done, indeed! We eagerly look forward to the rest of the series. A+, Gold Star, you guys go the head of the class! Stefan

  2. Wow! nice piece of work! Enjoyed it so much, I actually played it over and over again..and sort of bring back those nostalgic days of my life.. Keep it up!!

  3. Seriously, don't know what you are trying to express in this movie, that life in Singapore is hopeless??? Life need not be like that and most of our parents aren't like that either…

  4. This is really good. I felt pretty emotional watching the video as well. Can't wait for the rest of the episodes!

  5. Well done! Enjoying thoroughly! Will definitely show it to my girls though they probably have no clue what is all about but never mind. It reminded me of my own parents especially my father who passed away long ago. Being a parent myself now, I can truly understand the hardwork of parenting and but within that hardwork it brings immense joy!

  6. Very nice concept and cinematography! :')

  7. Absolutely beautiful and heartwarming! Well done!

I grew up eating the loafs and bread, going down the block to buy from the old uncle with his big basket, always around the time of 4-5pm, those were the days, my childhood days, thanks for bringing it back and you folks have done a great job recording, preserving and sharing a piece of Singapore's local culture and history!

  8. I've seen many videos about Singapore + fading heritage before but I really like this one. Its not just about the craft but really a story about the person behind it — why he does what he does. Most of all I love the parallel it makes between the molding bread and molding children! Not to mention the cinematography is beautiful. Looking forward to more!

  9. Love this video; as a parent of two primary school boys, it's like the voiceover is speaking my thoughts; as a Singaporean of a certain "vintage" who grew up with this type of bread, it is a sentimental journey. Thank you.

  10. such a beautiful video. once again, you guys never fail to document a daily but often overlooked part of Singapore! Looking forward to more posts and videos from u guys! :)

  11. This is a very nice and touching video…:)

  12. Having viewed all four episodes of the series this one struck me the most! (Read the papers today and got to know about rediscover.sg) So glad I read the papers today-ha! Awesome stuff you guys have here and are doing– jiayou! And THANKS!

  13. Hi Gary! Thanks for watching! There are 10 episodes in the series! :) Do remember to watch the other 6 as well!

  14. There's a melancholic feel to the short clip, which appears to be promoting parenthood in a subtle yet pessimistic way. This appears to overshadow the objective of highlighting traditional bakeries/confectioneries. But overall, the clip is well-edited, professional and artistic. Well-done!
